“Mutts Rule” and “Breeders Kill Shelter Dogs’ Chances,” were the messages delivered by two female protestors, and when security guards wisked the woman away, the Garden crowd cheered with delight.
And speaking of “Mutts Rule”, I have a bone to pick with the Westminster Dog Show. Turns out Terriers have won roughly half of the ‘Best in Show’ awards handed out in the 134 year history of Westminster.
What’s wrong with these people, haven’t they ever heard of a ‘Schipperkee’? Have any of you ever heard of a Schipperkee? They’re black, they’re peppy, they’re fun. In fact just like Scottie’s, the Schipperkee was bred to hunt and kill vermon. But unlike the Scottie, the Schipperkee does it’s work on the water.
The ‘Schipperkee’ is from the Flanders region of Belgium. They’re utilitarian creatures who more often than not ended up as canal barge dogs. The dog job was to keep rats and other undesirables off the boats. The name Schipperkee, loosely translated, means ‘little sailor’.
Schipperkees are great dogs, but the problem is nobody has any idea what they are when they see them. This is probably why they don’t do well at the Westminster. In fact in the 134 years history of the Westminster Dog Show, a Schipperkee has never won ‘Best in Show’.
