The Morbid Internet

The saying is true; you can find anything on the internet. The real question is should you find everything on the internet? The internet has some very dark corners that are looked into every know and then. I assume it is simple to say that if someone has posted it out there, someone is looking for it.

How long will it take for the video of the croc hunter’s untimely death to make it out for the masses to view? Will it ever happen? Will you watch it? I don’t have any doubt it will find its way onto the net.

Iraq video’s a gory galore of extreme video are overflowing the internet. Graphic video has found a new home. You no longer have to go the those sketchy video stores of the past to rent “Faces of Death”. The Iraq war seems to have spiked interest in this genre. From U.S. Soldiers taking out Iraqi soldiers with long range sniper riffles to the beheading of U.S. hostages.

I hate to admit it but every once in a while I get the urge to seek out these videos. I have viewed several videos from Iraq. I know several people who viewed the beheading videos. I simply have no interest in seeing someone loose their life however. We humans are ultimate voyeurs to the fullest degree, but sometimes we must draw the line.

We have become so desensitized to violence that we don’t blink at violence in the movies. Don’t get me wrong, I love violent movies. But- I do believe we cross the line when we witness real people loosing their lives on video. I simply do not believe we have the right to view the last moments of someone’s life.

Perhaps 9-11 played a major role in the news/video based solicitation of people being killed on TV. Nobody wanted to pull away from the TV set. Seeing people jumping from windows is something that you can not forget. I don’t have a problem with the news reporting stories, but showing people jumping from the towers over and over again is simply unnecessary.

I am a strong supporter of freedom of speech. But there is one fundamental thought that goes along with this freedom. Just because we can does not mean we should…
