It’s A Bird, It’s A Plane, It’s a Man In A Lawn-chair

Kent CouchSome people are never satisfied. In his second flight Kent Couch of Oregon strapped himself into his lawn chair. 105 large helium balloons enabled Couch to to soar for close to nine hours. His journey was approximately 193 miles.Couch most likely got the idea from Larry Walter the original lawn chair pilot. Walter’s flew his chair up about three miles in 1982. Walter’s was fined and agreed he would not try it again (without permission).

Couch had a fairly well thought out configuration for his second flight. He had a fairly elaborate balloon system controlling rise and fall via releasing helium and water bags acting as ballasts.

Couch told the Bend Bulletin pager “When you’re a little kid and you’re holding a helium balloon, it has to cross your mind”.
