Cents and Sensibility – It’s Not Easy Being Green!

San Francisco says no more bottled water and Maryland says no more plastic bags. Coast to coast the “Green” theme is here to stay. What started as an ideology years ago, the going green craze is making an impact.

I can remember when stores first introduced plastic bags. Chain stores pushed them heavily when they realized how much money they could save. Several stores like Shoppers Food Warehouse used to charge ten cents for paper bags. For the most part, paper bags are reserved to the higher priced niche stores. I remember a small movement to prevent the use of plastic bags when they first hit the masses. Obviously the stores knew how much money they were going to save and had the staying power to fight those who were “green” at that time.

Bottled water has been around for a long time. Originally a convenience item, now a trend. Everyone has a water bottle in their hands nowadays. There are many companies fighting for the top spot in this very lucrative market. Does anyone drink from the kitchen sink anymore?

Im no tree hugger, but I am not blind to the wrongs of my ways. We need to start caring about our world. Too often we go for what is cheap and easy. It’s easy to not care since it’s the future populations that will suffer our ill decisions. Even if we don’t care it appears that the local governments are going to be deciding for us. Maybe this is just another opportunity for them to put a tax on something, maybe they are actually concerned.

OK, I will step off the soapbox now; besides I need to get that case of water out of my car and bring it into my office.
