Well, no new video iPod, but Apple has updated the nano and iTunes.
The iTunes app works the same as the previous versions however it now has some cool new features. Multiple display views have been added to the library. I love the old jukebox style of flipping through album covers (Cover Flow). A little tedious for browsing but fun none the less.
Of course the biggest change for iTunes is the ability to buy movies. Apple has been working very hard to bring this to fruition. The movie prices vary. I don’t think that I will be purchasing a lot of movies from iTunes however I like having the option. I think the iPod is great for watching drama’s and comedy’s etc. I don’t really like watching action or horror movies on them. DVD’s and TV shows are now 640×480. They will look great on your iPod and should look decent on DivX as well 😉 (hint, hint). When you watch your freshly downloaded movie you will also notice new player controls. I think this single change is worth the update.
iTunes also now has downloadable games for your iPod. I will be downloading Tetris for my iPod today. Gaming is a fairly new idea for the iPod. I have seen some non-Apple sites with games for the iPod. I didn’t trust installing them so it is nice to see Apple is offering them via iTunes.
As I am writing this post, one fundamental thought keeps stirring in the back of my mind. The iPod is a music player. First and foremost it should be a music player. I love it for what it is. All these little extra’s that Apple wants to add into it is okay – as long as they keep the fundamentals in mind.
