772 Pound Freshwater Stingray Caught with Rod & Line

Holy Mackerel Stingray – That thing is HUGE!

A British angler landed a freshwater stingray that weighed in at 772lbs, measuring 7′ plus a 3′ tail. Not only is that one ginormous stingray- he caught it using a rod and line!

Giant Stingray

Unbelievable, Ian Welch needed the assistance of twelve other people to get the ray out of the water… Welch a fisherman and biologist caught the stingray while in Thailand on a stingray tagging project.

“It buried itself on the bottom and the main fight was trying to get it off the floor. I tried with every ounce of power but it just would not budge. After half an hour my arms began shaking and after an hour my legs went. Another 30 minutes went by and then I put a glove on and physically pulled the line with gritted teeth and somehow I found the reserves to shift the fish.”

Ian Welch now has the honor of catching the biggest freshwater fish with a rod and line.

The stingray was tagged and released back into the wild.
